Sleeping Better While Pregnant

I spent a lot of time in bed while pregnant. Especially for my 2nd child -- I didn't have "morning sickness", I had all day sickness that lasted for the first 5 - 6 months of my pregnancy. I didn't glow. I was just trying to survive.

My oldest daughter and my husband got to spend a lot of quality time together during this period. Their days were spent going to the park and the zoo. Mine were spent curled up in bed and feeling nauseous.

It was all worth it in the end, but I found as I got bigger that I did get progressively less comfortable lying in bed. My hips got sore like a lot of pregnant women, and I did have trouble sleeping. And being sleep deprived certainly didn't help.

Luckily, my husband is in the bedding business, and he got me a memory foam topper pad to put on the bed. And this really helped relieve my pressure points in my hips and shoulders, and I was able to both hang out in bed much more comfortably and get much needed sleep.

I got a 2" topper pad, which worked for me and was easy to move around in. He also carries 3" toppers, and if your bed is real firm you may need this. But since you sink in a fair amount more, the 3" topper may be more difficult to move around in.

And I know that this is important when you are expecting a baby because you don't want to waste money on something that doesn't work for you when looking at all the other baby expenses on the way (like getting a carrier!).

As much as I loved my topper, I did stop using it after I gave birth since I co-slept with the baby and I wanted a firmer surface for the baby.

Another option you may want to check out is a body pillow. I've tried some of these at stores, and they seemed really comfortable. I didn't end up getting one since I had a bunch of pillows to use, but I always coveted one of these big body pillows. Looking around on the web, I saw all sorts of options. One other thing I used a lot, as my back would hurt, was a moist heating pad. These days they have the microwaveable ones made with beads that work well -- you can search moist heating pads on Amazon and see a bunch of different options along with their reviews.
